The Variety Produce Rescue Mission, in partnership with Gleaners Community Food Bank, utilizes the vast amount of produce that arrives every day at the Detroit Terminal but which would remain unsold in order to reach children and families in need throughout Southeastern Michigan. Variety’s goal for this program is to provide healthy, nutritional food to children who otherwise may not have access or who may go to bed hungry.
Previously, there was no program in place to “rescue” the produce that would otherwise be thrown out; therefore a system for procuring and quickly moving the low cost or donated produce to those in need was established.
Each terminal operator at the Detroit Union Produce terminal works collaboratively with the program, and the produce wholesalers willingly facilitate this incredible program as well—providing monthly donations of unsold product directly to the program for frequent distribution.
Due to Variety’s supportive and longtime partnership with Gleaners Community Food Bank, fresh fruits and vegetables are then distributed across the five county metro-Detroit areas through relief agencies, soup kitchens, shelters and outreach centers.
