The power of a dream is one of the most inspiring gifts a child could have. On June 7, 2008, Variety is inviting you to encourage children throughout Southeast Michigan to capture their dreams by attending the third annual DREAM CATCHERS™ fundraiser.
Proceeds will allow children to further their dreams by supporting Variety’s mission of providing vital medical and therapeutic services, recreational facilities and educational opportunities to children with special needs.
In preparation for this year’s event, children throughout Southeast Michigan overcoming physical, social or emotional challenges, have been given disposable cameras and assigned to take photos capturing their greatest hopes and dreams. Their picture stories and inspiring wishes will be displayed at the DREAM CATCHERS™ event on June 7 at the Townsend Hotel.
In addition, long-time Variety supporter and donor Henry Baskin will be presented with the 2008 Dream Catcher Award in appreciation of his dedication to Variety.
Attendees will enjoy cocktails and hors d’ oeuvres and a special musical performance.
The DREAM CATCHERS™ event concept is the creation of Linda Solomon and Rob T. Allen. Linda provides at-risk youth across the country with photographic instruction, disposable cameras and the request that they capture their greatest dreams on film. Linda and Rob incorporated this initiative with the Native American legend of dream catching. In this tradition, parents encouraged children to open their minds to the power of dreams and hung a small, circular weaving over them while they slept. The Dream Catcher, as it came to be known, was believed to let in the good dreams while blocking the bad ones.
